This blog was extremely difficult because after all of the blogs and the paper on the good life I am sort of sick of talking about it. For the most part I believe that our class has picked apart just about every aspect of it, and things are starting to get a bit monotonous but we aren’t done yet so I guess I don’t have a choice. ha-ha… When I was looking for the good life on google I happened to be listening to the new track by Jay Z called “Roc Boys”[i didn't spell rock wrong that's how it is] and it made me think of how some people can come from nothing to having everything with hard work. Sure not all young black men or anyone for the fact can end up the hip-hop mogul that Jay Z is, but they can do great things.

Anyway, while listening to Jay Z’s new track I came a crossed a website that charges poeple inorder to teach them how to live a good life. The first thing that I thought was, how do you TEACH some one how to have a good life? A good life is what ever that person makes it, and not by what someone tells a person it is. Another thought that came to mide was, how could some one not know what a good life is? Both of these questions I believe relate back to how a person is raised. If children are raised to believe only in the bad in life, and are shown that their is so much thing as happyness than it is possible for someone to maybe not understand what a good life is. I am interested in what you think the reasons are about why someone wouldn’t understand what a good life is; so comment this blog and explain what you think the reason is.

Aristotlewas a Greek philosopher, who wrote about diverse subjects that include:physics, metaphysics, poetry, theater, logic, rhetoric, politics, government, ethics, biology, and zoology. He was also the student to the great philosopher Plate, and taught Alexander the Great. Aristotle was among the most influential of the ancient Greek Philosophers, along side Socrates and his teacher Plato. They transformed the Presocratic Greek philosophy in the foundations of Western philosophy as we know it today.

Eudaimonia, or ‘happiness’, is the supreme goal of human life. Aristotle believed that everything has a purpose – the good for a knife is to cut, and a good knife is one that cuts well. In the same way, Eudaimonia is the ‘good’ for a person.

Aristotle’s contribution to the good life exists with the ideas of virtue ethics and Eudaimonia, which define all of the desires we are faced with when contemplating about “happiness”. In Aristotle’s theory of Eudaimonia he says everything has a purpose even if we don’t necessarily see it at a first glance. I relate this theory to bad events happening over peoples lives because out of the bad you can usually find some good. Evil things occur throughout the world, but if those evil things didn’t happen than we may never see the good in people. Yes, world hunger is a tragic thing, but without it we may never see the good of the world.

The good life involves developing a good character. Moral virtues are cultivated by habit. To become a generous person, I must get into the habit of being generous. Put another way, it is not enough to be told that I should be patient. To become patient, I need to practice patience.

This quote is saying that sometimes things don’t just happen because we tell them to happen. We get into habits such as eating, sleeping, driving, and having a home, and it is when we get into those habits we can look at others and realize the atrocities of the world and try to help.

This is a continuation from the last blog that I wrote comparing men to women, and I feel that it is appropriate because it goes deeper into the thought of how women are viewed more in the eyes of the media. Women and men have different versions of the good life, but the man’s versions seem to be less important than that of women sometimes. I think that men should be viewed in the same way for this, and in the article that I found called “11 Things Women Don’t Know About Men” it does just that.

1. Getting angry at us for not reading your mind is like getting angry at yourself for not being able to fly. It’s not just futile, it’s physically impossible.
2. Yes, we do think Jessica Alba is hot. Sometimes we’re even dumb enough to admit it.
3. Don’t ask us to understand your shoe fetish. Asking us to respect it is even sort of pushing it.
4. You do look good without makeup, just not as good as you look with it.
5. Ever notice how we don’t fight with our male friends? That’s why we get so frustrated when we fight with you.
6. You care what you’re wearing infinitely more than we do. In fact, if you’re naked when you open the front door, you won’t hear an argument from us.
7. You don’t like to get hit on in public, you don’t want to date on-line and you don’t want to be set up on blind dates. Tell us if sending messenger pigeons is an appropriate way of courting. Because if it is, we’re all over it.
8. There should be a statute of limitations on stupid things that we said that cann’t come back to haunt us. I propose 24 hours.
9. Cooking dinner for a man is like buying flowers for a woman, except it takes a lot more time, effort and thought for you to do it. Thanks. We appreciate it.
10. We actually like your girly pet-names for us, but please, not in front of the guys!
11. Just because we like looking at the women in Maxim doesn’t mean we want to actually converse with the women in Maxim. Not for long, anyway.
12. Your nice guy friends are the most reliable source for telling you if your new boyfriend’s a jerk. And he probably is. (By the way, you might want to consider marrying that nice guy who’s giving you advice about the jerk.)

This article is intriguing to me because it isn’t often that you hear how men feel about certain things, and it is relevant to the idea of the “good life” in that sometimes the good life can sometimes simply be being heard. Men are constanly not being heard because they are always too worried on making a women happy or what they want, and we are left wondering what is behind the macho physical exterior that they put a crossed.

As I was checking my email today I happened a crossed an article about the 10 secretsmen face, and it brought me to think how we(girls/women) aren’t really as different as them(men). Women don’t usually like being thought as just an object to be starred at among other things, and men don’t like being thought of as just a wallet. The article that I read went into the feelings or men in our society which is a switch from most articles being published for males to try and understand women.

Usually arcticle are published about what women want, and there is even a movie based on that, but we continuoulsy forget that women are not the only sex living on this planet. Men are constantly over looked, and when they are actually looked at it is for being shallow, manipulative, and in most cases in looking like pigs. However, I think that sometimes men are just misunderstood, and this article goes into the ten things that most men don’t let anyone see. The last few secrets of the article are that:

9. Hanging up on us is a surefire way to make sure we go to bed mad.
10. We’re sorry. Whatever it is, we’re sorry.

These are traits that belong to women as well, however, you usually only hear about them from women.

How does this relate the the good life you may ask? Well thats simple. Both men and women are seen as having a different version of the good life altogehter, but I don’t think that is necessarily true. I believe that we all have similar versions of the good life that has just a few differencials. Like for a women a good life is most likely to find a good husband, have a nice house, a few children, and a garden for all intensive purposes, and for a man it might be to have a loving wife, house, car, children, and a hobby or to. These versions aren’t very different even though they may seem like their two worlds apart. Its like having the same cell phone in a different color or year, but all in all that phone is still a phone.Right?

I know, I know, IPods… It seems like in today’s society IPods are everywhere, and sometimes they are more of a nuisance than something great, but if you think about it the good life is located right inside that little rectangular piece of machinery. If you take a step back and look at an IPod as a traveling playlist than it’s easier to see how you can fit the good life inside of its memory. Music is one of the biggest ways that people deal with their feelings, and with an IPod you can put any kind of music that you want onto it. If you in a bad mood you may want to listen to sappy love songs, depressing songs, or songs that will pump you up. The same goes for all different types of songs and feelings.

Music Artists seem to get deeper into our thoughts and moods easier and more efficiently than we do our selves. Music is universal and tell more than just a story, and even when we think that a band is gone or an artist is washed up it only takes one song to bring them back into our heads and hearts. Muic is the song of life, and a life full of music is to me considered a “good life” and with out it things would constantly stress me our and my feelings may not be able to be expressed.

When I was doing research for the film American Beauty i decided that it might be a good idea to use some of the same sources to find articles on the “Good Life”; so that’s what I did. I used the Academic Search Premiere to locate different articles on or concerning the good life, and this week an article about one man stood out to me. Germain Lubango Kabemba is a humanitarian who decided that helping other people who suffer is living a good life for him.

His job is to provide basic health-care and services to a population that has been cut off from all other international aid since the rainy season began here in July. He has also become skilled in the subtle diplomacy needed to help both the area’s black tribes and Arabs whose tit-for-tat raids wrought havoc in the area and caused the current dilemma.

This man has also gotten involved in other dangerous regions all with the hopes of helping people. He shows that even something as simple and easy as helping people has its rewards. Yes, Kabemba’s job is more complex than simply helping people, but the point can still be made. Sometimes reaching out a good hand can mean the world to someone, and might possibly lead them to a good life. Sometimes we take for granted all of the good things that we have, and forget the some people might no be so lucky.

“When they see me sharing almost the same life as them, [the local people] respect that,” he says. “Still, if I compare my own condition to that of the people here, it’s 10 times better, so I won’t complain. For me it’s not a big burden. It’s part of my commitment to MSF”

Kabemba can teach humanity a thing or to about selflessness, and his good life is simply having the satisfaction of helping others that are less fortunate.

Many people in today’s retrospect believe that the American Dream can only belong to Americans, but that isn’t always fair is it? I was reading an article by Souheila Al-Jadda that talks about one family’s nightmare in America. The Garadah family moved to the US for political aslym, and had begun their own version of the American dream by having four children and all the simple things that make one happy, only to be denied. Mrs. Garadah is facing deportation and no counrty will accept the enire family. So what will happen to them? They like many other families will be seperated due to our broken immagration system .

Their situation becomes more complicated by the family’s background. Maha is a Jordanian citizen of Palestinian descent. She will likely be deported to Jordan. Bassam, who carries only Egyptian travel documents, has been refused entry to both Egypt and Jordan. The couple lived in Bulgaria and Kuwait before immigrating to the USA. But Kuwait will not allow the entire family to return because they are Palestinians and do not have citizenship rights. (In fact, the judge, in rejecting their asylum request, mistakenly ruled that they could return to Kuwait without facing persecution.)

We should not be able to stop other people from living a good life, and that is exactly what we are doing to this family. All four of the children were born in the US so they are US citizens, but we wouldn’t curse their parents back to counrties that wont except them as a family. The American Dream is the appitomy of living the “Good Life”, however by deporting this mother and father we are taking that “Good Life” away from them. Do we have that right? Should we have that right? In my opinion no, we shouldn’t deny the chances of an American Dream to non-Americans just because they may have been born somewhere else. I am no saying that all cases should treated in this respect, however, we should look at the families that have tried to live by our laws and rules to make a more accurate decision on who should be deported back to other countries.

Just because the “American Dream” is a big part of the US we shouldn’t exclude people from other countries in trying to share in it. By excluding hard working families from this dream makes us greedy as people, and as a country. We should share what we have with others, and maybe if we do that then maybe someday the other countries wouldn’t look down on us like they do today.

From time to time throughout our lives, we as people constantly change our minds about what we want from life. Some times the good life is seen differently from one age to another, and depending on what stage you are in your life things could be simple to make you happy or it could be difficult. For instance, for most teenagers in high school getting a car is the good life, and for people getting out of college the good life could be getting a house or have a nice career.

“Life is precious to the old person. He is not interested merely in thoughts of yesterday’s good life and tomorrow’s path to the grave. He does not want his later years to be a sentence of solitary confinement in society. Nor does he want them to be a death watch.”

In this quote it shows how older people react. Life is precios for old people becuase they realize that much of their life is over, and that they may not have much time left. He is also not interested in thoughts of yesterday becuase when your that age theres no point in looking back because you may not have that much time ahead of you. They also don’t want others to look back at their lives and see someone who was lonely.

The good life is something that is different in each person, but have you ever stopped to think about what would happen if everyone had the same good life or had exactly the same thing as someone else. The novel The Giver kind of reminds me of this philosphy in that no one was able to have their own dream or aspiration, and their entire life was planned out for them. How would you feel not being able to make the decisions in your life? I know that I wouldn’t like it and that it would hold me back.

Having your own version of the good life keeps us all different and the world unique. If everyone had the same dreams the world would be boaring, not to mention a hard place to live. If everyone wanted the same thing only a few people could actually get what they want and those who werent fortunate to achieve their dreams would become depressed. Having your own dream gives you a purpose or a goal to acheive, and without that their is no reason to exist. People would be ruitennly depressed because they would know that their is no bettering themselve because their is only so much to go around. For example say the good life for everyone was to own an ipod but there are only 10,000 to go around with 20,000 people wanting one. It would be pointless to want something that you know you’ll never have right?

The theme of the “good life” can be vary vague; however, some aspects are pretty clear. For instance you can tell your not leading a good life if nothing seems to be going right, but even then things are still debatable. On searching the so called good life on the web I was able to find a true or false quiz on what it usually takes to lead a “good life”. The quiz was called What it takes to lead a “good life” and it gives a variety of different scenarios that may help you think of your life in a different context. The quiz also gives you true and false answers but they cannot be all that viable because each different user has his/ her own expectation of what their good life consist of.

Each different persons expectation can lead to some deffinitions of what the good life is, however, things are more compicated when you may not have the money to go on vacation dreams spots, or the availablity to even travel across the counrty. Some places across the world see their spots as a place where one can go out and live the “good life”. The people that live in those places believe once you get a taste of the good life your problems are settled, but thats not true because you still have to return home to pills and problems.
